27, 2002.
The train crosses Baseline, June 27. On the previous Tuesday, June 25, about
8 a.m., Amtrak #21, the Texas Eagle southbound, was involved in a fatal auto-crossing
accident at this crossing. A 44-year old lady, apparently talking on her
cell phone, rammed through the downed crossing gates at about 40 mph, into
the path of the 75 mph Eagle. There was nothing left of her car. The entire
consist of the train stopped about a quarter mile away. The photo on the
above right shows pieces of her car with flowers that someone had laid there.
